Spiritual Gluttony

I just thought I would share with you all what I have been learning lately. It goes along with my last post about chapel. God really used that time to refocus me on Him. Being focused on ministry and Bible classes is all good, but that can even become an idol if Jesus is not our focus. Because of my new found focus, God has been able to reveal to me why I have felt so spiritually dead lately. I now see that He has been trying to reveal this, but I couldn't see it because I wasn't focused on Him.

A couple weekends ago we went to Halifax for the Hillside Rally. While there, Jeff and I had a good talk with Matt Kieth who was on his final weekend of his internship with the youth group. We talked about spiritual gluttony. So many times Christians are being fed a lot (which is great) but we never give. We never pour out what is being poured into us. We think singing songs, hearing messages, and Bible study should fulfill our spiritual needs. But, as important as those things are, sharing our faith and being there for others is just as important. If we don't share what we are taking in, then we become spiritual gluttons.

I had become a spiritual glutton. Yes, I'm helping out in the youth group, but I don't open myself up to others. I don't continually share what God has done and is doing in my life. I haven't been reaching out to others in love. I've been soaking up all this knowledge and thinking about how I'm going to apply it to my future ministry, when I need to be applying it now. Spiritual gluttony is a disease that I don't want anymore. Do you?

Just something to think about. Have a great day. much love becky

  1. Hey you! That is an awesome point, and I haven't really thought much about that till lately. I'll definately be praying for you guys cuz it would be very easy to fall into that being where you are. Does that make sense? Anyways, also keep me in your prayers that I don't fall into that pattern next year when I go off to school. Love ya!

  2. Jeff & Becky,
Good post here, it's an interesting point that the disciples even missed. You know we will have to deal with "gluttony" in this sense when the people who walked with Jesus everyday didn't know what to do with themselves when He left.

You know, something about "the church" that I dispise is the fact that we aren't like Jesus most of the time. We pretend we are like Him but really we are in it for ourselves, "what can I get out of this?", "why don't people do things my way?", and "what were they thinking?" are common comments. Then we stand back and wonder why God isn't blessing things. Gluttony and selfishness go hand in hand.

    Just something to chew on.

  3. Hey Erik. I agree. Too many people, including myself, are guilty of going to church for the "feel good" feeling of the week. Rather than going to give praise to God and learn more about Him. If the right songs weren't sung or if the right songs were song the wrong way, we don't like the service that week. Of course, this applies in more areas then just "worship," but this is the area I see it the most. When really, it should be all about Him and others. Not ourselves. The church really needs to rethink this cuz it's a messed up way of thinking and living. Thanks for the comment. Talk with you later man. much love becky
